Publishing cadence should not decide page count. Before approving a new draft, determine whether the reader need already has a credible home.
Search the inventory
Look for the core question, related terminology, and the intended audience. Read the closest pages instead of relying on titles alone. Note their purpose, evidence, current performance, and maintenance condition.
Compare reader outcomes
Create a page when it supports a meaningfully different task or decision. Update an existing page when the new material improves the same answer. Consolidate only with a reviewed redirect and internal-link plan.
Record the choice
Add a short rationale to the brief, including the pages compared. This helps later editors understand the intended distinction and spot drift.
The decision is editorial, not purely numerical. Search data and content similarity can inform it, but neither reveals every reader’s intent with certainty.
