Add an Assumption Register to SEO Content Briefs

Published September 8, 2026.

Every content brief contains assumptions. Writing them down makes them reviewable before a draft turns them into confident prose.

Capture consequential assumptions

List beliefs about the reader's role, prior knowledge, desired outcome, geographic scope, tool access, and the stability of the topic. Ignore harmless stylistic preferences; focus on choices that would change the answer.

Attach confidence and evidence

Label each assumption high, medium, or low confidence and cite the observation behind it. A Search Console pattern, customer interview, official requirement, and editorial hunch have different evidentiary weight.

Set a response rule

High-impact, low-confidence assumptions need research or owner approval. Medium-risk items can be framed transparently in the article. If evidence is unavailable, narrow the scope instead of pretending the assumption is universal.

Review the register after publication when real reader questions arrive. It is not bureaucracy; it is a compact memory of why the article took its particular shape.
