Walk the Redirect Destination Before Closing an SEO Ticket

Walk the Redirect Destination Before Closing an SEO Ticket

Published September 9, 2026.

A redirect is not complete merely because the old URL stops returning an error. The destination must preserve the reason a reader or crawler followed the old address.

Start from the old route

Request the exact historical URL, including meaningful parameters when relevant. Record every hop, the final status, and the final canonical. Multiple hops deserve review even if the browser eventually arrives.

Compare intent

Read the old title or archived purpose from the ticket, then inspect the destination. A retired service guide should not land on a generic homepage when a current equivalent exists. If no equivalent exists, document why the broader destination is the least confusing choice.

Repair references

Update controllable internal links and sitemap entries to point directly to the final URL. A redirect can protect old external references, but it should not become the site’s normal internal path.

Close with a timestamped HTTP check and a short intent verdict. This makes redirect maintenance a reader-centered practice instead of a status-code exercise.
