Baymard's 2025 checkout benchmark found that 64% of desktop sites and 63% of mobile sites had a mediocre or worse checkout UX. Apps performed better, but 46% still fell into that category. The finding points to a review opportunity, not a universal conversion target.

Turn the benchmark into a review

Walk the funnel on a real phone and desktop. Record the first point where a buyer must guess, repeat information, or discover a new cost. Check guest checkout prominence, password rules, delivery dates, cart quantity controls, fulfillment options, and required field labels.

The review should produce a short table with issue, device, funnel step, evidence, owner, and next test. Do not redesign the whole checkout from an external average. Fix the largest measured leak and compare the same funnel definition afterward.

Limitations

Baymard evaluates leading ecommerce sites using its own usability guidelines. The benchmark does not predict any store's conversion rate and does not replace analytics or user testing.

Frequently asked questions

Does mediocre UX mean a store is failing?

No. It means there are documented usability opportunities. Revenue impact depends on traffic, product, audience, and the exact issue.

What should be tested first?

Test the step with the largest qualified-user loss, split by device and payment path.

Can an operator help with this work?

Yes. An operator can run the recurring device checklist, capture evidence, and route defects while a product owner chooses the fix.

When the review queue needs a named owner, ecommerce operations support can document checks and exceptions.
