CMI reports that 55% of B2B marketers cite creating content that prompts a desired action as a challenge. Publishing more pages does not solve an unclear action. The brief needs to name the reader, decision, evidence, and next step before drafting begins.

Add an action gate to every brief
Record the search intent, reader problem, proof needed, objections, internal links, and the single next step. A CTA should follow the article’s argument and offer a useful continuation. Avoid a generic contact prompt when the reader needs a checklist, comparison, or measurement method first.
Review published pages for action quality separately from traffic. Check scroll depth, qualified clicks, assisted conversions, and feedback from sales. A page can be useful even when its direct last-click count is low, but that role needs to be documented.
Methodology and limits
CMI and MarketingProfs surveyed 980 B2B respondents, mostly from North America, in mid-2024 for the 2025 outlook. Results are self-reported and not a performance guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Should every research article sell a service?
No. The next step should match intent and can be another useful resource.
How many CTAs belong in a page?
One primary next step is easier to understand and measure.
What if action data is unavailable?
Record an interim proxy such as qualified internal-link clicks and schedule a measurement fix.
