Content teams in technology companies are usually small even when the publishing surface is large. Content Marketing Institute reports that 82% of surveyed technology marketers have a dedicated content marketing team or person, and 52% of those teams have two to five people.

| Dedicated teams with one person | 19% | Single-owner risk is material |
| Teams expecting to grow | 27% | Some leaders expect demand or strategic scope to expand |
| Technology marketers rating content very or extremely successful | 25% | Staffing alone does not establish effectiveness |

Capacity is more than headcount
Map the weekly work across research, briefing, drafting, review, publishing, distribution, measurement, and refreshes. Mark each task as strategic, repeatable, or approval-bound. A small team can publish consistently when repeatable work has a checklist and a clear handoff.
The daily routine should protect research quality and internal linking, not just increase article count. Track cycle time, missed publishing dates, source freshness, revision rate, and refresh completion.
The content scheduling for marketing teams guide describes the handoff model. A content scheduling VA can own the repeatable queue while subject-matter experts retain final review.
Methodology and limits
CMI analyzed 274 technology marketers who responded to its annual survey in July and August 2024. The findings describe respondents and should not be treated as a staffing prescription for every technology company.
Frequently asked questions
Does a two-person content team need outside support?
Not always. First identify repeatable work that is stealing time from strategy, then decide whether to automate, delegate, or hire.
What should the first content operations hire own?
Start with scheduling, source logging, internal-link checks, metadata, and publishing QA. Keep positioning and claims with the content lead.
Is publishing volume the best productivity metric?
No. Pair output with quality, search visibility, qualified conversion, refresh completion, and rework.
